Our "AAA extended RV coverage" costs $119 a year and towing the RV into Lone Pine costs $160, but it's covered. So the way I figure it, we just made $41!
That's Mr. Cup-Half-Full talking. He showed up about a half an hour after our second breakdown in an hour. He was preceded by Mr. Oh-Just-Fuck-Me, Mr. Goddamnit-This-Can't-Be-Happening-Again, Mr. Please-Shut-Up-Honey-I-Need-To-Vent, and Mr. I-Think-I-Have-A-Crazy-Plan-But-It-Just-Might-Work. In that order.
John, the nice towing guy seemed to think immediately that he knew what was wrong after I detailed our brief saga.
John: "Ah, it's the fuel pump, I've seen a thousand of these."
Me: "The fuel pump broke in 2003. I watched them work on it for two days in Reidgecrest and they couldn't fix it. You know there's two fuel pumps."
John: We're smarter than they are in Ridgecrest. Yep, it's the back fuel pump. We have that part on the shelf. You'll be out of here by noon."
This swift and assured diagnosis filled my glass up half way. It was a far cry from the torment of my 2003 vacation to Ridgecrest to watch the antics of Roger the Monkey Boy.
We walked the 3/4 of a mile into town for a nice dinner and then walked back to the gas station parking lot to bed down. It's gorgeous here; I've always loved the east side of the Sierras. I'm sitting in my camp chair drinking some scotch thinking that it's truly bizzare that I can upload photos with my phone (and the previous blog entry), be reading email from friends wishing us a speedy recovery, and sharing this with you all while I hear cows moo, see the stars shine, and feel a gentle breeze sweeping across the valley.
Oh, but what's up with the punctuation in Lone Pine, CA?
OMG, I cannot believe that happened again. I feel so bad for you guys! I think this means, though, that you will have an extra-special burn, even more special than usual, for all that you had to go through getting there.
