Folks in Seattle should make sure to attend Brian Doherty's reading from This is Burning Man next Tuesday tomorrow at the UBookstore at 7pm. More on this below.
When people ask me how Burning Man was this year I've tried to just offer a wide-eyed smile and a single superlative: "Amazing."
It's impossible to really convey what goes on out there, what it means and most importantly the way it makes you feel and how that feeling can completely fuck up a person for life in the best way possible.
I re-enter after a burn with a demeanor that can swing from blissed out (Oh my god that was beautiful!) to pissed off (why does the off-Playa world work like this?) and it's easy for people to slip into jokes that really aren't funny at all and actually are kind of insulting: "Wow must have been some good drugs out there, huh huh (nudge nudge wink wink)."
So this year I've been working on a more minimalist approach because the alternative, which I am still prone to slip into, is a one hour monologue on Burning Man that swerves from high brow academic speak ("community" "manifesting a civic alternative") to "here let me show you my pictures" to "well, you know it's really all about the fact that it's a city not a party" to a story about getting my ass kicked while wearing a bear suit in Pillow Fight Club.
This difficulty in explaining is one reason Burning Man has been a difficult thing for me to write about.
Last year I posted a list of things I didn't want to forget that probably makes little sense unless you were there, a reminisense of my introduction to the bears which hopefully catches some of the surreality of life in BRC, and a musing on one moment that crystalizes the pervasive feeling of human connectedness that I annual experience in the desert.
These brief writings are just snapshots, little moments in time. It hasn't seemed possible to me to write about Burning Man without stomping out the joy in an effort to be explanatory or analytical. So it was with great trepidation that I heard of This is Burning Man the week before I left for the Playa this year and listened to a broadcast with it's author.
Little did I know that I'd end up becoming fast friends with Marjorie a friend of Brain's, who shares his long history of pranks and cavorting. Marjorie sent me a copy of the book replete with her personal annotation and an inscription from Brian which reads: " Mark, Thanks for caring. I hope I get this right--Brian"
And you know what? At least from my experience as a three-time burner he does:
The event ends up presenting in the starkest possible way the core queestion of a living being: What do I do now? The struggle for survival--sublimated in civilization by going to the office rather than hunting the mastodon--settles that question most of the time: I work. We do what has to be done to make the money to buy the shelter and the food and, if we are lucky, all those other higher-mammal things that make the time when we aren't working go by sweeter. Because everyone puts so much effort into providing flash, entertainment, and bizzarity for the delectation of all, every day at Burning Man is so packed with everything life has to offer--love, freely elected creative work, partying, learning, improvised zaniness, drugs, challenging conversations--that your sense of normal time is shattered. A flood of glorious superfluity washes over you, and each day and night seem an eternal reoccurence of everything both wonderful and terrible about life in a human community. Burning Man generates generates an unspoken and expected bond of mutual dependence, having less to do with any communist vision thatn with the idea that we are a community of independent, creative adults mutually responsible for making Burning Man work. And Burning Man only works if it's the wildest, most extreme, most unusual experience of anyone's year.
If you're in Seattle and at all moved by the above passage then get your ass to the UBookstore tomorrow at 7pm and then join the post reading hangout. Brian writes: " I and Chicken John, very old time burner and character in the book, will be taking over a room at a bar called the Rendezvous for showing of classic historical BM videos. That will be free too, tho we will do a hat-passing for anyone who wants to help defray our travel expenses."
Thanx

Two new studies show why some people are more attractive for members of the opposite sex than others.
The University of Florida, Florida State University found that physically attractive people almost instantly attract the attention of the interlocutor, sobesednitsy with them, literally, it is difficult to make eye. This conclusion was reached by a series of psychological experiments, which were determined by the people who believe in sending the first seconds after the acquaintance. Here, a curious feature: single, unmarried experimental preferred to look at the guys, beauty opposite sex, and family, people most often by representatives of their sex.
The authors believe that this feature developed a behavior as a result of the evolution: a man trying to find a decent pair to acquire offspring. If this is resolved, he wondered potential rivals. Detailed information about this magazine will be published Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.
In turn, a joint study of the Rockefeller University, Rockefeller University and Duke University, Duke University in North Carolina revealed that women are perceived differently by men smell. During experiments studied the perception of women one of the ingredients of male pheromone-androstenona smell, which is contained in urine or sweat.
The results were startling: women are part of this repugnant odor, and the other part is very attractive, resembling the smell of vanilla, and the third group have not felt any smell. The authors argue that the reason is that the differences in the receptor responsible for the olfactory system, from different people are different.
It has long been proven that mammals (including human) odor is one way of attracting the attention of representatives of the opposite sex. A detailed article about the journal Nature will publish.
